The science
Career satisfaction and success are closely linked to personality and interests, this is the foundation of Holland's Theory of Career Choice. Developed by psychologist John L. Holland, this theory proposes that people are most likely to thrive in work environments that reflect their unique personality types.
Holland believed that matching individuals to compatible work environments not only increases job satisfaction but also boosts productivity, persistence, and career success.
According to Holland, both people and work environments can be classified into six broad categories. When a person works in an environment that aligns with their dominant personality traits, they are more likely to feel motivated, engaged, and fulfilled in their career.
This theory has been widely researched and applied in career counseling across the world. It serves as the basis for the Self-Directed Search (SDS), a career assessment tool designed to help individuals discover their interests and explore careers that best fit their personality.
Each type represents a cluster of interests, values, skills, and preferred ways of interacting with the world. While most people show a mix of several types, the top 2–3 codes usually form a unique personality profile that can guide career decisions.
